Tyler's first bishop was Most Rev. Charles E. Herzig, D.D. A native of San Antonio TX, Bishop Herzig was born August 14, 1929 and was ordained to the priesthood on May 31, 1955; appointed Bishop of Tyler December 12, 1986 and ordained Bishop of Tyler on February 24, 1987. Bishop Herzig died September 7, 1991.
The second bishop was Most Rev. Edmond Carmody, D.D. A native of Ireland and a priest of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. He served as Auxilary Bishop in San Antonio following a period of missionary work in Ecuador with the St. James Society. In 1992 he was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Tyler. March 17, 2000 he was transfered to the Diocese of Corpus Christi in Texas.
On December 29, 2004 the Diocese of Tyler was made part of the new ecclesiastic province of Galveston-Houston.
