Vert, a cross Or, off-center, in chief a star argent, in base dexter argent three pine trees of the first.
The shield of the Diocese of Tyler, Texas, is green with a gold cross blazoned on it, just off center. Green, the color of hope, is the color of the piney woods and forests so prominent in the East Texas landscape.
In the upper left (bearer's right) is the silver five-pointed star of the state of Texas; in the lower section of the shield, a silver field with three green pine trees. These two charges "name" the diocese in symbol: "The Diocese of Tyler in the Piney Woods of East Texas." Further, the star stands for the enlightenment, guidance and holiness. The evergreen trees stand for the sturdiness, growth and life, especially eternal life. The use of three trees recalls the life of the Christian in the Holy Trinity.
When the arms of the diocese and the personal arms of the bishop are impaled together, the motto and sword come from the bishop's personal arms.
