Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS THE BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL, “30: TURNING THE CORNER”? WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
The Bishop’s Annual Appeal is the primary vehicle which enables the diocese to fund various programs, services, and ministries throughout the diocese and within our parishes. Above all else, The Bishop’s Annual Appeal is your opportunity to join your diocesan family in supporting the work of Christ in the local Church.
Although our local parishes are able to address many needs, there are others needs that are beyond their capabilities. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal provides the support needed to continue growing our diocese, to reach out to those in need, and to minister to our brothers and sisters in Christ.
CAN I MAKE A ONE-TIME GIFT TO THE BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL INSTEAD OF MAKING A PLEDGE?
Certainly. Participation is the most important component of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. We ask that you consider a gift or pledge that reflects the blessings God has provided for you. Remember, it is equal sacrifice not necessarily equal giving.
IS MY CONTRIBUTION TO THE BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL PART OF MY TITHE TO THE CHURCH?
The vision of Bishop Strickland is to evangelize, and he strongly encourages parishioners to work towards giving a full tithe of 10% to God as the Creator and Giver of all things adding that he also encourages the sharing of our time, talent and treasure in gratitude. A good recommendation is that you contribute 5% to your parish, 4% to other causes and faith based ministries and 1% to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I GIVE TO THE BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL?
God has given each one of us gifts, graces, talents and abilities which are to be shared responsibly and wisely with others. Faithful stewardship is more than occasional acts of charity and service. It is a way of life, a commitment to giving of our time, talent and treasure in thanksgiving for all the blessings we have received from God. Just like the story of the Poor Widow in the Gospel (Lk 21:1-4), Christ calls us not just to make financial gifts from our abundance, but also from our substance, our very selves.
IS MY PLEDGE LEGALLY BINDING?
No. A pledge is a commitment made under a particular set of circumstances. If those circumstances change, you may adjust the pledge payments and/or balance accordingly.
JUST WHAT WILL THE BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL FUNDS BE USED FOR?
The gifts received by the Bishop’s Annual Appeal are used exclusively for the work of the Church in the Diocese of Tyler. These services and programs include: Seminarians, Vocations, Retired & Infirm Priests, Priest’s continuing formation, Family Life, Marriage Ministry, Youth Ministry, Faith Formation, Hispanic Ministry, Catholic Schools, Campus Ministry, Catholic Charities, CET, Communications, Stewardship & Development, Tribunal Services, Ethics & Integrity, and Rural Parish & Mission Assistance.
HOW IS THE BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL TARGET DETERMINED?
The diocesan target for the 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal is $2,200,000. This amount is determined by the diocesan budget and finance committees as they budget and work toward providing the services and programs the Appeal supports.
HOW ARE THE BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL PARISH TARGETS DETERMINED?
Based on the urgent need of the Diocese, the overall target for the 2016 Annual Diocesan Appeal is $2,200,000. Each parish will have a target based on the percentage of overall offertory (Sunday collections) that the parish receives each week. These are targets, not assessments! Money raised will not be subject to the cathedraticum.
OVERALL TARGET OF NEW APPEAL: $2,200,000 ARE PARISH TARGETS MANDATORY?
No. The 2017 parish targets are not mandatory. It is expected that all parishes will participate in the Appeal and will generate a substantial amount of in-pew pledges. All parishes should strive to achieve 100% participation among their parishioners.
