With grateful hearts, this weekend we remember Bishop Charles Herzig who died in office on Sept. 7, 1991. Bishop Herzig, a man of great humility, built the very foundations of our still-growing Diocese. May he rest always in the peace of Christ.
Then Msgr. Herzig, a priest of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, was named the first bishop of the newly created Diocese of Tyler by St. John Paul II on December 12, 1986. He was ordained in the Oil Palace in Tyler on February 24, 1987.
Before his death from cancer at the age of 62, Bishop Herzig was a tireless shepherd of the new diocese, driving thousands upon thousands of miles around his territory to build and organize the Church in East Texas.
