The Diocese of Tyler Office of Youth Evangelization is sponsoring Rukus 2016, a Catholic music festival, April 16, 11 a.m.-9 p.m., at 10645 CR 35 in Tyler.

The festival will include such acts as the Dave Moore Band, the Josh Blakesley Band, Alex Gotay, and Toni Harris.

The event also will feature an open mic, 11 a.m.-noon.

Bishop Joseph E. Strickland will celebrate Mass.

Cost is $40 per ticket, or $60 for VIP tickets. There will be a $10 cooler charge. No alcohol is permitted. Food vendors will be on site. All proceeds will benefit diocesan pilgrims traveling to Krakow, Poland, for World Youth Day with Pope Francis this summer.

The Diocese of Tyler will observe the National Blue Sunday Day of Prayer for Abused Children April 24. The day of prayer began in 1994 with 20 churches but has grown to include over 7.4 million participants on five continents. Parishes and missions are asked to pray for abused children and for those who rescue them during the General Intercessions. A flyer is also available in English and Spanish that may be used as a bulletin insert. See here for more information.

The Daughters of Divine Hope will offer an 11:30 a.m. Mass April 11 for clergy celebrating birthdays and ordination anniversaries this month, and for deceased clergy. The Mass will be celebrated in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and lunch will follow in the Cathedral Center. Other Masses will be celebrated May 9 and June 13.

The Tyler Catholic School Foundation will host its 24th Milam J. Joseph Golf and Tennis Tournament on Monday, April 11, at Willow Brook Golf Club in Tyler. Registration begins at 11 a.m., followed by lunch and tee time at 12:30 p.m. Proceeds are dedicated to support scholarships at St. Gregory Cathedral School and Bishop T. K. Gorman Catholic School. There will be raffle prizes, complimentary lunch, goody bags and more. Format is a six-player team, with a shotgun start. Individual tickets are $150 and a team of six is $900. A tennis tournament will be held concurrently with the golf tournament. Tennis format is a doubles round robin with light snacks preceding the tournament. Afterwards, players join for happy hour while prizes are awarded.

Bishop Joseph E. Strickland will ordain Deacon Jonathon Frels to the priesthood June 11 at 10 a.m. in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The entire diocese is invited to this day of prayer and celebration.

Msgr. John Brennan, a retired priest of the diocese and former pastor of St. Mary Church in Longview, will be one of the honorees at the June Jamboree, a dinner, dance, and auction benefitting Padua House, a retirement home for priests in San Antonio. Families Anonymous, a support group for those affected by a loved one’s addiction, alcoholism or other destructive behaviors, meets the second Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the parish hall at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Frankston. The group is the only FA chapter in East Texas, and is open to anyone who has known the despair of a loved one’s addiction. Catholic counseling services are now available in the Diocese of Tyler. Simone Key, MA, LPC-I, is on staff at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to provide faith-based family, marriage, individual and group counseling. Bunco Night has been changed to the third Monday of each month, with the next one April 18 at 7 p.m. in the parish hall.

Ethics Training classes basic and recertification will be May 21. Basic training will be at 9 a.m., and recertification will be at noon. St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church. Our Lady of Fatima Guild meeting is April 11 at 5 p.m., with the Holy Rosary at 6 p.m.

St. Leo the Great Church. The parish hosts a Game Night the fourth Saturday of each month at 6 p.m. in the parish hall. Come join us for board games, card games and more, and build community.

The rosary is prayed each Sunday, 30 minutes before Mass. All are invited to pray.

The SCB Food Pantry will open Thursday, April 14th, from 9-11:30 a.m.

Nursing Home Singing is Saturday, April 16, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Frankston Nursing Home. Join David Etheridge in bringing a smile to the residents. You don’t have to be a singer to participate!

Holly Lake

Holy Spirit Church. The Knights of Columbus parish breakfast will be April 10 after Mass. Plates are $5 for adults, free for children.

St. Mary Catholic School. A Knight to Remember Gala benefitting St. Mary Catholic School is Saturday, April 9, 6:30-11 p.m., at the Summit Club, 3700 Judson Road in Longview. The evening will include a beer and wine bar, silent auction, dinner, dancing, a raffle, and wine pull. Tickets are $80 each. Tickets are available at the school. The Dominican Laity of Lufkin invites parishioners from both parishes to join them in praying the Liturgy of the Hours (Vespers) each Wednesday and Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. in Saint Andrew’s Chapel. In so doing we honor God’s command to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:1).

A Catholic Homeschool Support Group Mass and meeting will be held Friday, April 8, at St. Andrew Church, starting with 12:15 p.m. Mass at followed by fellowship in the Education Building (the old parish hall with playground). St. Andrew Church. Godparents and parents who wish to have their children baptized must attend a baptism preparation class scheduled every second and third Friday of the month at 7 p.m. in Spanish. English classes are by appointment. All baptisms are held the third Saturday of the month at 11 a.m. Please contact the parish office 2-3 months prior to register. Please bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. The semi-annual Quince años preparation class will be Saturday April 16. Attendance at the meeting is required to celebrate a Quinceañera. The next class will be Oct. 8. Pre-registration is required. Contact Deacon Summers at 979-575-9002 by Wednesday, April 13. $25 covers the cost of materials for the family.


St. Joseph Church.

High school seniors, please give your name and address to the church office so you can be included in the special Mass and reception to be held in May.

All high school youth are invited to Rediscover Jesus, Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in the parish hall.

Items needed by the food bank include canned fruit and pork and beans.

The soup kitchen serves hot meals each Tuesday, 4:30-5:30 p.m., in the parish hall.

Mount Pleasant

St. Michael Church. St. Michael’s annual Spring Carnival will be May 26-29 at the Fair Grounds in Mount Pleasant. Join the fun Memorial Day Weekend, Thursday, 5-9 p.m., Friday, 5-11 p.m., Saturday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m., and Sunday, noon-10 p.m., for food booths, rides, games, music, and more.


St. Mary Chapel, Stephen F. Austin State University. Fundraising is under way for Phase 1 of a new Catholic student center and chapel. Construction is scheduled to begin in June. For more information, and to help, please visit the website.


Sacred Heart Church. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas is offering scholarships for girls from Sacred Heart Parish – two $500 awards, one for starting and one for continuing college or trade school. Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The Tyler Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is participating in the first annual East Texas Giving Day on Tuesday, May 3. The on-line donation event is sponsored by The East Texas Community Foundations. This will cover 32 counties of Northeast Texas (which looks like a close match to the diocese). There are over 60 other non-profits participating during the 24 hour giving period. The event is intended to attract first-time donors, especially younger people. The funds raised for The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be used by the Diocesan Council and our ten local conferences to provide assistance to our neighbors in need.  Donations on May 3 can be made at www.easttexasgivingday.org and selecting Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Watch for local events on May 3 that will include mobile donation stations, entertainment and information about the participating agencies.

Parents who wish to have their children baptized and raise them in the Catholic faith are invited to the baptism classes on May 9 and 16, July 11 and 18, September 12 and 19, and November 14 and 21, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Cathedral Center.
