Bishop Strickland, Dr. Tamisiea name new Director of Faith Formation

Bishop Strickland and Dr. David Tamisiea, executive director of the St. Philip Institute of Catechesis and Evangelization, have announced the selection of Father Joshua Neu, SSL, as Director of Faith Formation.

Father Neu, a native of Fredericksburg, Texas, is currently parochial vicar at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Tyler. He is a graduate of the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, Magna cum Laude, and holds a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture. He holds an STB from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and BA in philosophy from the University of Dallas.

Bishop Strickland said, “It is good to have one of the priests of the Diocese involved centrally in the Teaching Mission. Father Neu is a very well educated priest who has talent for teaching and explaining the Catholic Faith. Fr. Neu speaks Spanish, and has intensely studied the Scriptural languages at the Pontifical Biblical College in Rome as he pursued his Licentiate. He is well formed in the bounty of the Church’s theology and I look forward to the great things he can help the Institute achieve. Please, let us all pray for Father Joshua as he undertakes this task.”

Father Neu will be working with Dr. David Tamisiea, Executive Director, and Deanna Johnston, Director of Marriage and Family Life, at the St. Philip Institute, and his job will be to direct the implementation of teaching in the parishes for all of the people of the Diocese. Dr. Tamisiea said, “I’m very excited to have Fr Joshua Neu join us as the director of faith formation. He has the combination of excellent theological formation, good pastoral sense, and great ideas for how to build up faith formation in the Diocese of Tyler. I’m excited for him to join the team.”

Bishop Strickland founded the Institute earlier this year with his Constitution on Teaching the Catholic Faith. It says in part:

In order to answer the question, ‘How do we become a teaching diocese?’ I am founding the Saint Philip Institute of Catechesis and Evangelization in the Diocese of Tyler. This Institute is charged with providing the parishes of the Diocese with the materials, expertise, and support to perform the mission of teaching as outlined in this Constitution. The Institute is founded for the service of the faithful of the Diocese.

Father Neu said, “Bishop Strickland has proposed a bold vision for the diocese in the renewal of Faith Formation and Teaching. I look forward to implementing his vision on the ground, working with the people of our parishes to fulfill the Bishop’s vision of making this a teaching diocese. I’m also excited about using digital media and new technologies in service of the Teaching Mission, as the Bishop describes in his Constitution on Teaching.”
