Physician and Health Care Ethics Scholar to speak at inaugural Catholic Professional Network Event

Physician and health care ethics scholar Jeffrey Bishop, Ph.D., M.D., will speak at the East Texas Catholic Professional Network’s inaugural event on Wednesday, September 20 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Willow Brook Country Club in Tyler.

All working Catholic professionals are invited join the East Texas Catholic Foundation and St. Philip Institute of Catechesis and Evangelization for this evening of networking, fellowship, and enrichment in the Catholic faith.

Tickets are $35 per person. Attendees must register in advance here by September 18.

Dr. Bishop’s talk, entitled “The Art of Dying and Statecraft of Killing: Medicine, Power, and the Drive to Legalize Euthanasia,” will focus on the power politics behind the push for euthanasia and how the Catholic witness might challenge these forces.

A cocktail and networking hour will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner and the presentation at 7:00 p.m.

The event is sponsored by Christus Trinity Mother Frances.

Dr. Bishop is Professor of Philosophy and holds the Tenet Endowed Chair in Health Care Ethics at St. Louis University. He is also the director of the Albert Gnaegi Center for Health Care Ethics. Bishop was a practicing physician for 17 years prior to coming to Saint Louis University in 2010, and has published widely in medical, philosophical, theological, humanities, and ethics journals. His research interests focus on the historical, political, and philosophical conditions that underpin contemporary medical and scientific practices and theories.
