Last year, I announced my plan as your shepherd to focus on the seven sacraments of our faith for the coming seven years. For the 2022 liturgical year, our diocesan focus was on the Eucharist and the call to deepen our faith in Jesus especially as he is with us in his real presence in the Blessed Sacrament. We also spent time growing in devotion to the Immaculate Virgin Mary, recognizing that a deeper relationship with his mother always draws us closer to Jesus.

I am now pleased to proclaim that we will enter into a Year of Baptism and St. John the Baptist for 2023, beginning with the First Sunday of Advent 2022. During this year, our focus will be on how the sacrament of Baptism as the “basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit” makes and calls us to be sharers in the life of Christ as priest, prophet, and king (CCC 1213, 1268).

Throughout this year, I encourage all in the Diocese of Tyler to pray, study, and reflect on the essential meaning of the mission given to us in Baptism. In this, we can be guided by the words of Pope Francis, “In virtue of their Baptism, all the members of the People of God have become missionary disciples” (Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, 120). We can also look to the wisdom of the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council who, in the Dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium, wrote:

Through their baptism and confirmation all are commissioned to that apostolate [the lay apostolate] by the Lord Himself. Moreover, by the sacraments, especially holy Eucharist, that charity toward God and man which is the soul of the apostolate is communicated and nourished.  Now the laity are called in a special way to make the Church present and operative in those places and circumstances where only through them can it become the salt of the earth (No. 33).

Journeying together through this year, we will look to the example of St. John the Baptist, the one sent to bear witness and prepare the way for the Lord, asking for his intercession in the way of salvation and peace in Christ Jesus.

Given at Tyler on November 26, 2022, the First Sunday of Advent.
