The Diocese of Tyler will celebrate the annual Red Mass on Monday, October 7, 2024, at 6pm at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Tyler. Very Rev. Doug Jeffers, JCL, Judicial Vicar of the Diocese of Austin, will be the homilist.
The Red Mass is a tradition dating back to 1245 in Europe, where the bench and bar attended Mass together at the beginning of each judicial session. The name comes from the red vestments worn by the priests in honor of the Holy Spirit. The Red Mass is celebrated to provide an opportunity for those in the judicial and legal profession to ask the guidance of the Holy Spirit as they pursue peace and justice in their communities, and for the faithful to pray with them and for them.
The Mass is open to all.
