This Thursday evening, June 10, the Vigil of the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I will be with the bishops of the United States gathered for the Spring Assembly of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in Orlando, Florida. That evening together we will consecrate the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This is being done in conjunction with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
In the midst of the tumultuous times in which we live, the scriptures remind us of this: “the plan of the LORD stands forever, the designs of his heart through all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people chosen as his inheritance. (Psalm 33:11-12)
Also: “the deliberations of mortals are timid, and uncertain our plans.” (Wisdom 9:14)
To consecrate ourselves again, individually, as a Church, and as a nation, is to renew a desire for our hearts to be formed by the Heart of Christ. For our plans and deliberations to be conformed to his. At the center of his plan stands always the Paschal Mystery, the mystery of the dying and rising of Christ. His cross stands at the very center of reality, at the very center of our hearts and of the plans of our hearts. Only in the cross are our hearts purified. Only in the cross is the good that we have done individually and as a nation purified and strengthened. Only in the cross are our sins and offenses forgiven.
I invite you to join in this Act of Consecration with me and with the bishops of the United States, gathered on this solemn occasion this Thursday evening, and to pray the Act of Consecration (see below). To pray that the founding ideals of our country may be more and more realized.
Pope Leo XIV has reminded us forcibly in his recent encyclical Magnifica Humanitas (On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence) of the dignity of each and every human being created in the image and likeness of the Creator and of the need to keep this at the center of our planning and thinking. He wrote:
“Human dignity does not depend on a person’s abilities, wealth, or position in life, nor on the right or wrong choices made; instead, it is a gift that precedes and transcends each person, endowed by God as an expression of his unfailing love” (50).
As we make this consecration, may our hearts be formed more and more by the Heart of Christ, on fire with love for each person. May our plans, as individuals, as a nation, and as a Church be conformed to his plans and designs that stand forever. The designs of his heart through all generations. To lead us safely through this life to the next, with our eyes on him, and our hearts formed by his love.

Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
On the Occasion of the U.S. Bishops Consecrating the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus:
You know the longings of our hearts, and you desire that we enjoy friendship with you.
From your pierced side, you have poured out the wellspring of life, for which we thirst.
Your heart burns with a love for all people to return to a right relationship with you.
We celebrate the abundant gifts you have given this nation, founded on the self-evident truths that our Creator has endowed all people with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
We make reparation for the offenses against you and against human dignity that have taken place in this nation.
May our hearts be united to yours, so that our families and communities enjoy peace and happiness; may broken relationships be reconciled, injustices repaired, and the wounds of our land be healed.
May your holy Catholic Church serve as a sign, pointing all people to your infinite love.
O Desire of Nations and Center of History, we ask you to bless these United States of America.
Who live and reign with God the Father
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

Este jueves por la noche, 10 de junio, víspera de la solemnidad del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, estaré junto a los obispos de los Estados Unidos reunidos para la Asamblea de Primavera de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos (USCCB) en Orlando, Florida. Esa noche, juntos consagraremos los Estados Unidos de América al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. Esto se hace en conjunción con el 250.º aniversario de la firma de la Declaración de Independencia.
En medio de los tiempos turbulentos en los que vivimos, las Escrituras nos recuerdan lo siguiente: “el plan de Yahveh subsiste para siempre, los proyectos de su corazón por todas las edades. ¡Feliz la nación cuyo Dios es Yahveh, el pueblo que se escogió por heredad! (Salmo 33:11-12)
También: “Los pensamientos de los mortales son tímidos e inseguras nuestras ideas.” (Sabiduría 9:14)
Consagrarnos de nuevo, individualmente, como Iglesia y como nación, significa renovar el deseo de que nuestros corazones sean moldeados por el Corazón de Cristo. Para que nuestros planes y deliberaciones se ajusten a los suyos. En el centro de su plan se encuentra siempre el Misterio Pascual, el misterio de la muerte y resurrección de Cristo. Su cruz se encuentra en el centro mismo de la realidad, en el centro mismo de nuestros corazones y de los designios de nuestros corazones. Solo en la cruz se purifican nuestros corazones. Solo en la cruz se purifica y fortalece el bien que hemos hecho individualmente y como nación. Solo en la cruz se perdonan nuestros pecados y ofensas.
Les invito a unirse a mí y a los obispos de los Estados Unidos, reunidos en esta ocasión solemne este jueves por la noche, en este acto de consagración, y a rezar el acto de consagración (ver más abajo). Para rezar para que los ideales fundacionales de nuestro país se hagan cada vez más realidad.
El papa León XIV nos ha recordado con firmeza en su reciente encíclica Magnifica Humanitas (Sobre la protección de la persona humana en la era de la inteligencia artificial) la dignidad de todos y cada uno de los seres humanos, creados a imagen y semejanza del Creador, y la necesidad de mantenerla en el centro de nuestra planificación y nuestro pensamiento. Escribió:
“Su dignidad no depende de las capacidades que posee, de las riquezas o del rol que desempeña, ni de las decisiones justas o equivocadas que toma, sino que es un don que la precede y la excede, dado por Dios como expresión de su amor que nunca falla.” (50).
Al realizar esta consagración, que nuestros corazones sean moldeados cada vez más por el Corazón de Cristo, ardiente de amor por cada persona. Que nuestros planes, como individuos, como nación y como Iglesia, se ajusten a sus planes y designios, que perduran para siempre. Los designios de su corazón a lo largo de todas las generaciones. Para guiarnos con seguridad a través de esta vida hacia la siguiente, con los ojos fijos en él y los corazones moldeados por su amor.

Sagrado Corazón de Jesús:
Tú conoces los anhelos de nuestro corazón y deseas que disfrutemos de tu amistad.
De tu costado traspasado has derramado el manantial de vida, del que tenemos sed.
Tu corazón arde de amor para que todas las personas vuelvan a tener una relación correcta contigo.
Celebramos los abundantes dones que has brindado a esta nación, fundada en las verdades evidentes que nuestro Creador ha dotado a todas las personas del derecho a la vida, a la libertad y a la búsqueda de la felicidad.
Ofrecemos reparación por las ofensas contra ti y contra la dignidad humana ocurridas en esta nación.
Que nuestros corazones se unan al tuyo, para que nuestras familias y comunidades gocen de paz y felicidad; que las relaciones dañadas se reconcilien, las injusticias se reparen y las heridas de nuestra tierra se sanen.
